Private Balloon Flight over La Garrotxa: Is It Worth It?
Compare private and shared La Garrotxa balloon flights by basket, price, transfer, weather flexibility and what exclusivity actually changes.

A private balloon is worth the premium when privacy is the event: a proposal, a milestone, four relatives who want to talk without a larger group, or passengers who specifically value seats and a small basket. It is poor value when the real goal is simply to see La Garrotxa from the air. The standard flight follows the same wind, lasts roughly the same time and includes the same fundamental sequence of takeoff, recovery and breakfast.
At current published prices, the gap is substantial. Vol de Coloms lists its shared flight from €195 per person midweek and €225 at weekends. Its private basket for two starts at €980 midweek and €1,560 at weekends; the private four-person product starts at €1,520 midweek and €2,100 at weekends. Those are live starting prices checked on 26 September 2026, not fixed quotes for every date.
The premium does not purchase control over the route, a guaranteed volcano directly below or immunity from a weather postponement. It buys a different social and physical space.
What changes when the basket is private
| Product | Current starting price | Defining difference |
|---|---|---|
| Shared flight | €195 weekday / €225 weekend per person | Larger shared basket; the most economical way to get the flight, toast and post-flight breakfast |
| Private for two | €980 weekday / €1,560 weekend total | Basket for the couple, two seats and table, personalized message and celebratory food |
| Private for four | €1,520 weekday / €2,100 weekend total | Four seats facing the pilot, table, snacks and drinks, with no unrelated passengers |
The current private flight for two includes seats and a table, a customized ground message, music, sparkling wine, chocolates, strawberries, local cake and breakfast after landing. The private flight for four lists four seats, a table, sweet and savory snacks, wine or cava, and the same post-flight breakfast structure.
That makes the two-person option a celebration product, not merely two standard tickets with more elbow room. If the message, music and food feel unnecessary, ask for a quote without assuming the published package can or should be dismantled. The operator may have other basket or tailor-made arrangements, but only a written confirmation establishes the product and price.
For four passengers, the arithmetic is closer. A weekend shared flight begins around €900 for four, compared with €2,100 for the private basket. The difference buys seated exclusivity and a smaller social setting, not twice the flight time. It can make sense for older relatives or a group whose conversation is part of the occasion. It does not automatically improve the view.
What does not change
The wind still chooses the track. Vol de Coloms’ standard flight description gives an approximate airborne time of one to one and a half hours and describes the ground team collecting passengers after landing. The private products publish the same flight-duration range.
Treat every named view as possible, not promised. Croscat, Santa Margarida, the Fageda d’en Jordà, Olot and the Pyrenees help describe the landscape, but a free balloon cannot follow a sightseeing circuit like a helicopter. Direction, distance and landing point depend on the morning’s air. A responsible pilot may choose a less dramatic line or not launch at all.
The rest of the experience is communal even when the basket is private. Passengers arrive at the operator’s facilities near Croscat, watch preparation, fly, land away from the starting field, meet the recovery crew and return for a substantial local breakfast. Unless exclusivity after landing is confirmed, expect the restaurant portion to overlap with other flyers.
Reserve the whole morning. Published arrival windows begin around 06:30–08:00 depending on season, but the advertised flight time is only the airborne segment. Briefing, inflation, the variable landing place, loading the basket, the recovery drive and breakfast all sit outside it. Do not book a late-morning spa treatment or a fixed lunch using “90-minute flight” as the door-to-door duration.

The premium test
Ask four questions before choosing private:
- Would sharing spoil the reason for going? A proposal or intimate family occasion has a credible privacy case. Landscape photography usually does not.
- Will everyone use the seats? Seating can be valuable for some passengers, but confirm suitability directly rather than treating it as a medical guarantee.
- Is a weekday possible? The published two-person premium rises sharply at weekends. One flexible weekday can save more than most luxury add-ons.
- Can the trip absorb postponement? A private reservation is still weather-dependent. The more expensive the occasion around it, the more important a reserve morning becomes.
Compare current La Garrotxa balloon activities, then verify the operator, basket, passenger capacity, total price and rescheduling terms directly. “Private” should mean no other paying passengers in your basket; the pilot remains with you, and other balloons may launch nearby.
Sleep nearby rather than manufacture a dawn crisis
The exclusive product pages include private parking but do not advertise hotel pickup as a standard inclusion. If a driver is required from Olot, Santa Pau, Girona or Barcelona, obtain a separate written quote and state both the pickup time and what happens after a weather postponement.
Vol de Coloms sells a shared flight with Barcelona transfer from €270 per person midweek. Its stated pickup is at the taxi stand in Plaça Catalunya between 05:00 and 06:00, with roughly 90 minutes of road travel each way. That is useful for a visitor who cannot stay in La Garrotxa, but it is not a private hotel transfer and should not be silently attached to an exclusive-flight booking.
For a premium two-night plan, sleep in Olot or near Santa Pau on the night before, and keep the following morning available too. The first morning is the flight target; the second is the weather reserve. A hotel that will pack an early snack, permit late breakfast or shift checkout after a delayed return can be worth more than a grander room farther away.
Avoid a long drive before dawn if the driver will also be tired after an early flight and celebratory breakfast. If returning to Barcelona the same day, leave the afternoon unstructured. The morning can be exhilarating without needing another attraction bolted onto it.

Weather cancellation is a core term, not small print
The operator’s current FAQ says passengers are contacted two days before the flight about the forecast. Rain or surface wind above 15 km/h can lead to postponement; the pilot may also decide on the morning that conditions are unsuitable. The FAQ says another date will be sought.
That policy is practical for residents and open-date gifts, but a visitor with two nights in Catalonia needs more detail. Before payment, ask:
- whether an operator cancellation offers only rebooking, a credit, or a refund;
- how long any credit remains valid and whether a higher future price must be paid;
- whether the private product can move to the next morning at the same rate;
- what happens to a booked driver, accommodation package or personalized message;
- by what time the final go/no-go decision is normally communicated.
Do not pressure the pilot because a proposal, photographer or expensive hotel is waiting. Weather authority is the safety feature you are buying along with the flight. A postponement is a functioning plan, not a failed service.
Accessibility and passenger fit need a direct conversation
The FAQ advises against flying for pregnant passengers and children under five. It also says the baskets use doors, but “door” is not enough information for every body or mobility requirement. Discuss the step, seat, standing tolerance, landing position, transfer vehicle and assistance needed before choosing a standard or private basket.
The operator publishes a separate adapted balloon product with a fully opening door, adjustable electric seats and an adapted return vehicle. It currently starts far below the exclusive two-person price. A traveler needing that equipment should book the adapted arrangement confirmed for their requirements, not assume the romantic private basket contains the same hardware.
Also disclose significant medical concerns to the operator and seek professional advice where appropriate. Comfortable shoes and season-appropriate layers matter on the field even if the air temperature feels similar aloft. Follow the crew’s instructions during inflation and landing; exclusivity never means directing operations.
Build a ground-level recovery day
If the flight moves, keep the day in the volcanic zone rather than chasing another operator across Catalonia. Use Santa Pau for a slow village morning, take an official low-level walk that suits the weather, or visit Olot. A wet or windy day may also make forest and exposed routes unsuitable, so the fallback should remain modest.
The final value decision is simple. Choose the shared flight when the aerial landscape is the luxury. Choose private when the identity of the companions, seated space and uninterrupted occasion justify paying several hundred euros more. If a weather delay would destroy the entire trip, neither product is ready to book until the itinerary contains a second morning.
